"Debbie Harry is the god I decided to believe in." Blondie superfan Iannis Tzovanis has an almost religious devotion to the band that has soundtracked his life.
In 1980, he read about the band in a music magazine and promptly went out and bought the single Call Me. The theme song to the hit film American Gigolo, Call Me was a collaboration with disco producer Giorgio Moroder and a number 1 single all over the world. It continued the band's astonishing knack for experimenting with new genres, mixing punk rock with disco, doo-wop, reggae or hip-hop to create some of the most iconic singles of the era.
"They pushed pop culture by trying out new things," says Iannis. "They were different and they made me realise that you can try anything you want."
In our video, Iannis shows us round some of his Blondie collection, including an actual heart of glass that once dangled off Debbie's mic stand, and recalls the time he acted as a tour guide for the band when they came to Athens in 1991.
This is one man who'll be down the front for the Against The Odds Tour.
Blondie's Against The Odds tour with Garbage will commence in Liverpool on November 6, 2021 and run through to November 21, with a closing date at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. The two bands previously toured together in 2017. For full list of dates and tickets, visit the AEG website.
