Green Day’s American Idiot will be made into a movie by HBO, the band’s singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has confirmed.
The film adaptation of their 2004 album will see the singer once again star as St Jimmy – a character he played during the stage show’s Tony Award-winning Broadway stint a few years ago.
When asked whether they’ll soon be focusing on the film project, Armstrong tells NME: “That’s the plan right now, yeah. We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”
This is the latest in a line of on-screen gigs for the frontman. He’ll play an ageing former rockstar experiencing a mid-life crisis in Ordinary World, which launches next week.
And Heart Like A Hand Grenade, a documentary based on the making of the seminal record, hits cinema screens across the US today.
Green Day have also announced an Australian and New Zealand tour next year in support of their long-awaited Revolution Radio. In the mean time, they have a number of dates over the coming months – with previously postponed North American shows to be re-scheduled in due course.
