Metallica helped food bank - without warning them

Metallica’s surprise announcement that their show in Toronto would benefit a local food bank left charity workers inundated with fans begging for tickets.

The band played their second-last show of the year at the Canadian city’s Opera House venue last night, with all proceeds donated to the Daily Bread organisation.

The intimate performance for an audience of just 950 was a continuation of their promotion of latest album Hardwired… To Self-Destruct, which was released on November 18.

Members of the Metallica fan club paid $25 for entry while others were charged $100, and all attendees were asked to bring non-perishable food items to the show, to assist the charity’s work.

Spokesperson Benita Aalto reports that the thrash icons didn’t speak to Daily Bread in advance of announcing the donation last week. She tells CBC: “This was a delightful surprise.

“We had one person calling us, saying if we had an inside track to Metallica tickets, ‘I will give you $1000 for two.’

“It’s wonderful that people are thinking that we are connected to Metallica. But we’re not – we’re just the delighted recipients of their generosity.”

Meanwhile, Vans have released a short behind-the-scenes video shot during the band’s album launch show at London’s House Of Vans earlier this month – view it below.

Hardwired… To Self-Destruct is Metallica’s sixth chart-topping album in a row. The band continue to add dates to their upcoming WorldWired tour, with the latest confirmed appearance being at Rock On The Range in Ohio next May.
